Popsicle Towers

Stick It to the Top #

A simple but tense engineering challenge! Using only popsicle sticks (and optionally tape), teams race against the clock to build the tallest freestanding tower possible. Great for indoor or calm team time.

How to Play #

Teams are given a fixed number of popsicle sticks (and optionally a small amount of tape). Within the set time limit, they must build the tallest tower possible that can stand on its own.

No external supports or leaning against walls allowed. At the end of the timer, the tower must remain standing for at least 5 seconds to count.

Rules #

Time Limit: Standard round is 5–10 minutes. Longer times allowed for harder variants.

Supplies: Each team may only use the exact number of sticks (and amount of tape, if allowed) given to them.

Freestanding: The structure must not be leaning against anything or propped up.

Scoring: The tallest tower that stands unassisted for 5 seconds wins.

Fair Play: No gluing, anchoring, or external materials beyond the provided sticks and tape.

Setup #

Setup Instructions:

  1. Divide into Teams: 2–6 teams, each with equal supplies.

  2. Distribute Materials: Hand out popsicle sticks (and tape if using).

  3. Explain Rules: Cover time limit, scoring, and fair play requirements.

  4. Start the Timer: Begin the round and let the building begin!

  5. Measure and Judge: When time is up, measure each tower. Only towers that stand alone for 5 seconds are eligible to win.
